Museum trustees face unique responsibilities and challenges regardless of museum size and category, which is why the Museum Trustee Association’s membership is at once diverse and cohesive. 19.6 percent of MTA member museums are classified as small independent institutions, with annual operating budgets of less than $500,000. 16.5 percent of members are medium-sized institutions, with annual budgets of $500,000 to $2 million. Large institutions with annual budgets more than $2 million make up 42.2 percent of MTA’s institutional members. The remaining 21.6 percent of our membership are university museums.

The largest single membership grouping is art museums, which makes up almost 59 percent of members. The balance of the membership is diverse and includes all the categories above and others.

MTA also reaches 4800 individuals. These include trustees, museum staff, and others interested in museum governance. MTA Patrons and Friends.
